Down by the mild ocean, spring breaks early, and the vines leaf out before the rest of Marlborough. Cool winds from the sea prolong the growing season, and the grapes are the last harvested in the province. The limestone in the soil, and the long growing season, gives a unique savoury structure to the Sauvignon Blanc and beautiful aromatic qualities in all varieties.
The Valleys range are wines that provide focus and clarity on Marlborough's fast-emerging sub-regions. Certainly regional and sometimes vineyard-specific, these wines highlight the attributes of individual sites and districts and their ensuing characteristics in the finished wines.
The Astrolabe Valleys Kekerengu Coast Sauvignon Blanc is
made from grapes grown at two vineyards in the Kekerengu
Coast sub-region on Marlborough’s Southern Coast. We
machine-harvest the grapes at night or in the cool parts of
the day to preserve the purity and intensity of flavours.
Neutral wine yeast strains allow the powerful fruit flavours to
dominate. A portion of hand-picked, high solids and wild
barrel ferment wine was blended in to add subtle texture and
complexity. I like to bring through the sense of the nearby
sea in my Kekerengu Coast Sauvignon Blanc with a
bone-dry, almost salty finish to the wine.
