Astrolabe wines is owned by the Waghorn family.
Jane and Simon became a couple while they were both studying at Canterbury Uni in Christchurch in 1980. After graduation, an interest in wine from his experience in a wine shop and the uni wine club prompted Simon to work in wineries on both sides of the Tasman, to see if winemaking would be his chosen career. Encouraged by his time in the cellars, Simon chose to study at the renowned Roseworthy College wine school, while Jane finished her post-graduate course.
Their three daughters Meg, Libby and Arabella were born in three different winegrowing regions as Simon pursued his career in the Barossa Valley, Waikato and Gisborne. Having forged a great reputation as a chardonnay winemaker in Gisborne, Simon was headhunted to be a foundation winemaker for a new venture in Marlborough. Soon after, Astrolabe was started by Jane and Simon, with help from friends Sally and Paul.
Jane maintained a rich career in education in fields as varied as childbirth, at-risk teenagers and family planning, taught at secondary and primary schools, and became Marlborough’s Childrens’ Librarian. She joined Simon working in Astrolabe as the business grew, and now leads the company, while Simon focusses on winemaking.
