Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc Wins Trophy

Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc Wins Trophy

The Astrolabe Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016 has won the Trophy for best Sauvignon Blanc at the Six Nations Wine Challenge. The Trophy winners were announced at an awards dinner in Sydney.

After having won 17 trophies and more than 30 gold medals in the past 15 years, Astrolabe Wines no longer enters wine shows. The Six Nations is an exception. Entry to this prestigious competition is by judge’s invitation only. The competition selects top wine critics from six new world wine-growing countries, and together they judge the best wines these countries produce.

Winemaker and owner Simon Waghorn is a veteran New Zealand winemaker who has been making Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc since 1995. The Astrolabe Awatere Sauvignon Blanc is a sub-regional expression of varietal wine.

“I have been fascinated by the qualities of the Marlborough sub-regions ever since I arrived as a young winemaker in 1994. I first released the Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc in 2005. As my winemaking style has evolved, I have also moved towards an Awatere dominant blend for my Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

The dry Awatere Valley has a more extreme climate than most of Marlborough, with strong winds, variable soils, greater temperature fluctuations and a later ripening season. Vines are planted from sea level to quite high altitude, and the scarceness of irrigation water is often limiting to vine growth. As a result, the grape berry size is reduced, and flavours can be more intense.

We machine-harvest the grapes at night or in the cool parts of the day to preserve the purity and intensity of flavours. In the winery, we take great care to handle the fruit in a way which allows the flavours and aromas of the valley to come through. My Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc has a full and lingering mouthfeel, dry finish and an emphasis on aromatic herbs and fresh, green fruits.”

Simon Waghorn, Winemaker.

Astrolabe Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016 reviews:

“The 10 vintages of this wine tasted since 2007 have averaged a near-gold score of 94.8 points, an outstanding achievement that probably makes it my top sauvignon blanc label. It helps that I particularly like the wine’s consistently tangy, cool-climate style that gives a nod in the direction of Sancerre. It has classic tomato leaf, nettle, chalky mineral and capsicum flavours. Nicely weighted wine with a dry, but not austere texture. Impressive concentration and length.”

“The 2016 Valleys Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc has the classic Awatere herbal-led nose with delicate underlying notes of lemongrass, lime leaves and yuzu. The light-bodied palate is dry and refreshing with great intensity and an earthy/mineral finish.”

“Vibrant and mouthwatering, with generous flavors of Key lime pie, fleshy green papaya and savory roasted herb. Focused and intense on the long, refreshing finish.”
